Four soldiers were killed and a dozen more were injured in southern Thailand after a roadside bomb exploded on Wednesday.

According to reports, an army truck with 16 soldiers on board was traveling in Thailand's Pattani province when a roadside bomb hidden in a canister was detonated by mobile phone.

The bomb weighed 50 kilograms, AFP reported.

"Sixteen soldiers were in the army truck -- they were being reshuffled for rest and recreation," a police officer in the Kha Pho district of Pattani province said adding that the four victims had died at the local hospital.
Another 12 soldiers were injured. Among them, six remain in hospital in critical condition.

Security personnel, those connected with the government and Muslims thought to be collaborating with the authorities are regular targets in southern Thailand, a region plagued with unrest in recent years, AFP reported.

More than 5,500 people have been killed since 2004, with rebel groups blamed for near-daily bombings and shootings.

Thailand held its first official peace talks with southern armed groups, but attacks have continued, AFP reported.
