A speeding dump truck crashed head-on into a school bus in southern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 17 children.

The children, students at the Bright Future School in Daulatpur, were travelling in Sindh Province on the way back home following a school trip in Nawabshah. A loaded dump truck that appeared to be speeding was travelling in the opposite direction on the single-track Qazi Ahmed Link Road.

"It was a head-on collision when the truck slammed into the school van on a single track dirt road. Apparently, speeding and recklessness resulted in the accident," police officer Abdul Rahim Gopang told Reuters in a telephone interview.

A total of 20 people, including 17 children died in the collision. The driver of the school bus was among the deceased. According to the Pakistan Tribune, the police have filed a case against the truck driver, who fled the scene but was later arrested.

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Pakistan, where traffic rules are ignored and roads are poorly maintained.
