The North Caucasus region of Dagestan is no stranger to violence. Insurgents wage violence on nearly a daily basis claiming they are fighting to create an Islamic state in the predominantly Muslim region.
At around 8 a.m. on September 23 a car-bomb explosion took place at the regional police station. Reports said a nearby building, which was under construction, collapsed due to the force of the blast, increasing the number of injured.
The explosion took the lives of 3 including the suicide bomber. Twenty people, including civilians and children, were taken to the hospital, according to Reuters, and two police officers were killed in the blast.
Dagestan sits on the Caspian Sea and is nearly 600km from the city of Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Reuters reports that Dagestan has become the focal point of violence due to a combination of radical Islam, anger over corruption and human rights abuses.
